TRUTH DECAY I
When there is disintegration of virtue, there will also be disintegration of truth. Virtue is ‘behavior showing high moral standards.’ Truth is ‘that which is true or in accordance with fact or reality.’ We do what we can to prevent truth decay.
Proverbs 3 gives us some instruction:
“Do not let mercy and truth forsake you;
bind them around your neck,
write them on the tablet of your heart,
so you will find favor and good understanding
in the sight of God and man.”
(3:3-4))
The instruction of ‘ bind them around your neck,
write them on the tablet of your heart’ in verse 3 reminded me of the original idea in Deuteronomy 6:
“And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.” (6:5-9)
It is interesting to me that in these scriptures the remedy for Truth Decay is to ‘attach’ truth and mercy and virtue in some fashion to our bodies, minds and hearts. In other words: it is not just found in a book… Bible. It is something physical, mental and experienced.
“You shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.” Jesus
