DERAIL AND RERAIL
When a train runs off the rails it is usually not the train at fault but the tracks. When we go off the rails we have usually taken a wrong path. We might make some bad path choices and wind up in some places we wish we hadn’t.
Another derailing is by ignoring our built-in protection: our conscience. Paul, an apostle, wrote to Timothy this very warning: “Cling to your faith in Christ, and keep your conscience clear. For some people have deliberately violated their consciences; as a result, their faith has been shipwrecked (1 Timothy 1:19).
Derailed or shipwrecked…is being off-course and in danger of destruction. Many times this invokes one of those ‘get me out of this and I’ll never do it again’ prayers.
To rerail is to get back on track. By realizing we are on the wrong path is the beginning of rerailing. Brokenness and repentance lay new tracks for us to travel on. Right direction comes as we follow the Psalmist advice: “Your word is like a lamp for my feet and a light for my path” (Psalm 119:105). Jesus is the Word and the word is about Jesus. (John 1:1-5)
“I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.” Jesus
