John the Baptist’s lifestyle was in stark contrast to many of the religious leaders of Jerusalem who lived in relative ease and luxury. While his clothing and diet were indicative of someone who lived in the desert (Matthew 3:4), they also depicted him in his role as God’s prophet (cf. Zechariah 13:4; his appearance is similar to the Prophet Elijah (2 Kings 1:8). Locusts and wild honey were a common diet in desert regions, and locusts (dried insects) are listed among the “clean” foods. “Every winged swarming thing that walks on all fours is detestable to you. However, this you may eat from all the winged swarming things that walk on all fours, which have jointed legs to hop with on the land. These you may eat from them: the locust of any kind, the bald locust of any kind, the cricket of any kind, the grasshopper of any kind. But any other winged swarming thing that has four legs is detestable to you.” (Leviticus 11:20-23)

That is surely a misprint of spilled ink on the scroll. I am not under the Law! I don’t eat bugs. I eat tacos. Not bug tacos… if I can help it. I could eat the wild honey on a sopapilla.

“Hear me, all of you, and understand: There is nothing outside a person that by going into him can defile him, but the things that come out of a person are what defile him.” Do you not see that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile him, since it enters not his heart but his stomach, and is expelled?” (Thus he declared all foods clean.) “What comes out of a person is what defiles him. For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.”
