BREADCRUMBING
Breadcrumbing is a term for stringing someone along with small nuggets of communication—but never fully committing to a relationship. Today those crumbs of communication tend to occur online. The person may respond to an Instagram story, like a Facebook photo, or text a funny meme. They may text back and forth periodically but never seem to agree to plans in person. The connection stalls, unable to evolve into a fulfilling relationship. (Reviewed by Psychology Today Staff)
Breadcrumbing is a colloquial term that describes a pattern of behavior; it comes from the famous fairy tale in which Hansel and Gretel leave a trail of breadcrumbs in order to find their way home. Breadcrumbing is not an official psychological term or diagnosis.
I think this very well describes a great deal of Christian teaching, preaching and processing. The message is often a ‘one of these days’ or ‘get ready for this or that’ or ‘when we all get fixed and healed up…’ then the Lord is going to do something. This is also stringing someone along. We can all always learn ‘some more’ but the carrot in front of the horse style leaves a lot of folks always hoping and waiting with frustrated faith.
Proverbs 13:12 said it perfectly:
“Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but desire fulfilled is a tree of life.”
We need the tree of life type living. We need Bread…not Breadcrumbing.
“I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats from this bread he will live forever. The bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.” Jesus
