MINT, DILL AND CUMIN II
I believe what I heard was that we are to learn to give in new ways. As in these verses… (Matthew 23:23 and Luke 11:32, see yesterday’s Journal) we don’t stop what we are doing, but there is a much greater understanding of giving. I think it is learning how to give the five things mentioned:
Justice
Mercy
Faithfulness
Not ignoring Justice
The love of God
This is learning to give new gifts in new ways… that do not compare with Mint, Dill and Cumin. The ‘tithe’ of the spices is formula, a percentage and this kind of giving makes us legal and religious. The ‘tithe’ is a concept from Old Covenant Law. The new kind of giving is not to avoid giving a portion of all we have but much more importantly it is learning that we become the gift in giving the five things above. There is no ‘tithes and offerings’ mentality in the New Covenant. (Neither are ‘tithes and offerings’ giving mentioned in the New Covenant) We simply give until we are also giving ourselves as the gift. Justice, Mercy, Faithfulness, not ignoring Justice and the Love of God are not something that we can put in a collection plate//bag/box but they are something we may become and that we freely give away. This isn’t ‘tithes and offerings’ thinking… it is Kingdom thinking for living and giving.
The truth of giving is learning to give and to become the Gift we are giving. Then giving (including money) is simple, normal and generous.
“Now they understand that everything you have given me comes from you.” Jesus
