MAKING CHOICES
C.S. Lewis (1898-1963) academic and author wrote:
“There are only two kinds of people in the end: those who say to God, “Thy will be done,” and those to whom God says, in the end, “Thy will be done.” All that are in Hell, choose it. Without that self-choice there could be no Hell. No soul that seriously and constantly desires joy will ever miss it. Those who seek find. To those who knock it is opened.”
(From: ‘The Great Divorce’)
There is much talk in our time about justice, equality, dignity, value, and ‘the image of God’ in each person. I believe each of these is intrinsic to the human condition. However, I also believe that the succinct opinion of Lewis in this quote is also intrinsic. It is what it is. Self-choice is just that…self-choice. It is the product of the human consciousness and will… we can eat a turnip or not eat a turnip. It’s our choice. Hell… or no hell. It is a choice. We cannot choose what others do but we can choose what we will do.
“All who love me will do what I say. My Father will love them, and we will come and make our home with each of them. Anyone who doesn’t love me will not obey me. And remember, my words are not my own. What I am telling you is from the Father who sent me.” Jesus
