DETACHMENT FOR ATTACHMENT
When we accept the cross (the life of the Cross) it should be so we may learn a higher love. We ‘mortify’ or ‘put to death’ ourselves only so we may rise from the dead stronger than ever. A seed dies in order to increase and grow…except it really does not die! What happens? It (we) acquires a superabundance of life and fruitfulness. We have supernatural life. “I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat is planted in the soil and dies, it remains alone. But its death will produce many new kernels—a plentiful harvest of new lives.” (John 12:24) That’s the detachment for the attachment!
There is one death that the Christian is absolutely forbidden to seek, and that is death that is sterile: Detachment for the sake of detachment. Death for the sake of death. The other kind of death is the kind that consists of Loyalty, Faith, the giving of ourselves…and our Love. This is the death that expands and multiplies life a hundredfold. We detach from whatever holds us from these virtues and attach ourselves to Jesus…the Giver of Life. That does not sound so much like death after all.
“For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it.” Jesus
