KNOCKING AT THE DOOR
Recently I was reclining in our living room at about 3 a.m. (this is not unusual) and I dosed off and had a dream. In the dream I was helping some friends move some household items and loading them on a truck. When it was loaded a couple of guys took off with the load and I decided to take a short nap between loads. As soon I as dosed off I heard someone knocking on the door. I was wide-awake and wondering who could be knocking at 3 a.m.? So I got up and went to the front door and there was no one there so I went to the back door…no one there. I had dreamed I heard a knocking on the door. I felt a little weird and I went back to bed. (Don’t y’all start calling the little white truck to come and get me; I’ll be O.K.)
Before going back to sleep I started thinking what a universal sound it is to hear knocking at the door. This is true in about every culture. Typically most people respond to a knock on the door.
It is little wonder that Jesus chose this universal sound to make a universal invitation:
“Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.” Jesus
