BECOMING RESPECTFUL
It is an interesting process we go through when we need to borrow something, get a loan, get stopped by a cop, go to a doctor, or go to church, or meet a religious leader… we become real respectful, real fast. We might even use the terms, “Yes, sir” or “Yes, ma’am” to the banker, policeperson, preacher or doctor. This respectfulness is also often a way of hoping to get a better result… from the person or from God.
“They’ll be respectful when they come to beg or borrow.” Rebel Don, rapper
It seems to me it is easier to be disrespectful when we don’t need anything. This includes from the Lord. But if we are sick, broke, out of a job and in trouble we might be so respectful as to take our hat off when we pray.
“When you are asked by someone to a wedding supper, do not take the important seat. Someone more important than you may have been asked to come also. The one who asked both of you to come may say to you, ‘The important seat is for this man.’ Then you will be ashamed as you take the last place. But when you are asked to come to the table, sit down on the last seat. Then the one who asked you may come and say to you, ‘Friend, go to a more important place.’ Then you will be shown respect in front of all who are at the table with you. Whoever makes himself look more important than he is will find out how little he is worth. Whoever does not try to honor himself will be made important.” Jesus
