THE MIGHTY MEN

In the Book of 2 Samuel chapter 23 we read descriptions of the Mighty Men of David’s Army. There are 37 of these Chiefs and Leaders (23:37). They are often singled out for great feats of courage and daring exploits they have done. But there are Three Mighty Men that get especially recognized Josheb-Basshebeth “raised his spear against 800 men, whom he killed in one encounter” (2 Samuel 23:8); Eleazar son of Dodai “stood his ground and struck down the Philistines till his hand grew tired and froze to the sword” (verse 10); Shammah son of Agee fought in a field of lentils and “struck the Philistines down, and the Lord brought about a great victory” (verse 12).

The Philistines were the archenemies of Israel and King David had many battles with them. In these battles these fearless leaders risked all for Israel, David and their fellow soldiers. They received acclaim in I Chronicles 11-12 as well as in 2 Samuel 23 (and other places). The above-mentioned are the top three of the thirty-seven Mighty Men.

These guys were some bad dudes. They did not run from the enemy. They understood delegated authority. They honored their leader (King David) though they had much authority of their own. They understood consultive leadership. They understood each person’s part of the overall vision and task. They guarded each other as well as those they protected and fought for. Though many… they were one Army.

Bottom line on these guys is they would simply say, “If you want my flag or my bean field or my sword…come and get it!” May the Lord raise up mighty warriors in the Spirit that compare to David’s Mighty Men. May I be one of them.
