CAN KICKING THEOLOGY

Another popular approach to things of faith is what I call Can Kicking Theology. The term to Kick the Can Down the Road means ‘to put off confronting a difficult issue or making an important decision.’ This approach is especially popular now with unlimited access to tidbits of information about many things. Few of us know more than the little clips we read or see and even those are often not verified…for sure. As long as we kick the can down the road we need not stop and figure things out. Unless kicking the can is what we have determined is figuring things out.

There are two major ways to Kick the Can Down the Road. One is productive and the other unproductive. The first we read in Acts 17:11 concerning the believers of Berea. “And the people of Berea were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they listened eagerly to Paul’s message. They searched the Scriptures day after day to see if Paul and Silas were teaching the truth.” Check it out for truth of scripture.

The second method is found eight verses later in Acts 17:19-21 when Paul was in Athens: “May we know what this new teaching is which you are proclaiming? Now all the Athenians and the strangers visiting there used to spend their time in nothing other than telling or hearing something new.” Just kick the can and look “for something new.” This is much like 2 Timothy 3:8: “always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.”

We may Kick the Can to find truth or to get away from truth.
