ROCK SKIPPING THEOLOGY

Skipping rocks on a pond as theology has two major practices. The origin and much of contemporary rock skipping is competitive to see who can get the most hops (skips) when a stone (usually a flat rock) is thrown to skip across water. The record is 88 skips (really). Kurt “Mountain Man” Steiner holds the record. The cast was achieved on September 6, 2013. I have done 6-7 skips myself (really).

Skipping rocks can also be meditative and casual. We go to a quiet mountain lake or a pond or slow moving river and innocently skip flat rocks on the surface as we inwardly sort through stuff.

Our theology is likely one or the other of these two rock-skipping experiences: Competitive or Meditative. We may try to know God by being competitive and aggressive or by quietly searching. I have done both and prefer to skip my rocks quietly.
