HANGING UPON HIS WORDS

Jesus did certain things as He moved about among people. One of those things was to always be the teacher. He taught by example, parable, story, demonstration and reference to the Law and Prophets. He brought truth and reality with His words. He brought healing and hope, clarity out of confusion, newness from old habits, peace out of strife, and love from hurt with His words.

Jesus often taught under great threat and obstacle. During one such time in Jerusalem we read, “And He was teaching daily in the temple, but the chief priests and the scribes and the leading men among the people were trying to destroy Him, and they could not find anything that they might do, for all the people were hanging upon His word” (Luke 19:47-48). This should define for us what it really means to ‘hang out.’ What a voice! What a message! The words from the Lord are so rich, so piercing; so true, so right, so authentic, so pure that it is difficult to find fault and disagreement. There are few things more desperately needed in this hour than to have clear and concise voices from women and men speaking words we can hang upon, words that transform us, give us the desire to try again, and that give reality to cold and dead religion. Words that give healing to our bodies and minds, hope to those who grieve, breath to those who are fainting and love to the ordinary among us.
