SPIRITUAL PEACE

Spiritual peace is hardly understood by any who would give the impression that it is something dull and joyless. Energetic spirits are naturally repelled by a peace whose main characteristic appears to be boredom. Those who love life and action cannot be blamed if they are adversely affected by the unfortunate and silly idea of heaven as a place where the saints stand around forever singing psalms and songs in King James English from the Reformation hymnal.

The God who created life and energy in its many forms would hardly inhabit a heaven marked by such dullness and boredom. He who fashioned man’s body for action would not ask him to settle down in his glorified state to an eternity of inaction. Being peaceable does not mean being passionless. Virtues are passions in order, while vices are passions in disorder. The joy that walks hand in hand with peace spreads from the individual who is at peace to his family, then to his community, then to his nation, and finally to the whole world.
