LIKE A THIEF
In one of the most striking images that Jesus uses to tell of his coming, he says he will come ‘like a thief in the night.’
“Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”
The apostles Paul and Peter both reference this:
1 Thessalonians 5:2
“For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord comes as a thief in the night.”
2 Peter 3:10
“But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.”
The whole idea is to be ready: “Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.” If we are ready… we should not care when he comes. Come on, Lord, come on.
“Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.” Jesus
