LOVING THE LORD
In the Gospel of Mark we read, “And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” The Gospel of Matthew records like this: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” And the Gospel of Luke says, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” This was the response to the trapping question the scribes and Pharisees put to Jesus: “What is the greatest commandment in the Law?”
The first answer is, “The Lord our God is one Lord,” and then “you shall love the Lord with all your heart…”
My thought was…what if this was on a scale for me? How would the percentages look?
“The Lord our God is one Lord” 89%
“Love God with all my heart” 53%
“Love God with all my soul” 47%
“Love God with all my mind” 54%
“Love God with all my strength” 43%
“Love my neighbor” 14%
“Love myself” 91%
Maybe my percentages are only half this high, or perhaps a little higher, and that’s why I love mercy and grace and not scales and percentages.
“There is no other commandment greater than these.” Jesus
