PIERCING THE SOUL
We read in the gospels that Mary was weeping at the crucifixion. After 30 years she saw her son Jesus being crucified and she saw the soldier pierce his side (John 19:34). And then she remembered old Simeon, the priest, saying by prophecy before Jesus was born, “And a sword will pierce even your own soul — to the end that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.” (Luke 2:35)
That day while Jesus was pierced, Mary’s own soul was pierced. Ours are as well because “the thoughts of my heart are open and revealed” by the Cross. It pierces my soul. I cry out with the Lord, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” God remains silent.
But then…through the blood of Jesus I was not forsaken.
