I CAN DO SOMETHING

Edward Everett Hale (1822-1909) writer, historian and minister (best known for his short story called ‘Man without a Country’ 1893) wrote,

“I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do something I can do.”

This is certainly solid counsel for Christians… especially those that have come from legalistic backgrounds that emphasized perfection in various forms without ever calling it that. Even the scriptures on Spiritual Gifts never intend to tell us ‘we have them all’ but the focus is on ‘doing the something’ with the gift or gifts we have been given. That’s all that is ever asked of the believer. We are to be faithful to what has been given to us by the Holy Spirit.

We can all do something… but the fact is: doing nothing is doing something… just not something very productive. While doing something we need to be doing something.
