ECHO CHAMBER
Christoph Arnold (1940-2017) wrote, “Even the most sincere, the most deeply founded in faith, go through hours of despair. At such times it is important to continue praying. Perhaps it will sound as if we are talking into an echo chamber. Or perhaps we will feel that our efforts are so insignificant, so weak, that our voice can never reach heaven. But prayer never depends on our feeling close to God; he is always close to us, and he does hear us.”
I have prayed many of these ‘echo chamber’ prayers and it is no fun. As Arnold says, “God is always close to us” but during echo chamber time it sure doesn’t feel like it… it feels like we are praying in a tunnel that leads to nowhere. The real test of faith for me is to keep praying when I don’t believe but I still do believe in praying…even if I think I am talking to myself.
“Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Jesus
