A LANGUID SPIRIT
Ephraim of Syria (306-373) wrote many hymns, poems and various theological works. I especially like this prayer concerning the languid (lazy, slow, weak) spirit. His spirit was anything but lazy as he wrote and produced hundreds of pieces of literature, poems and hymns.
The Languid Spirit
“O Lord and Master of my life,
remove from me this languid spirit,
this grim demeanor, this petty
lust for power, and all this empty talk.
Endow Thy servant, instead,
with a chaste spirit, a humble
heart, longsuffering gentleness,
and genuine, unselfish love.”
Lord, protect us from being lazy and slow to do good works, protect us from petty lusts for power and all of our empty talk.
“For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” Jesus
