WHO WE ARE
“It is imperative to have some awareness of what we are if we are to become different from what we are.” I first read a line something like this from some writing by Bruce Lee (1940-1973). “Our lack of self-awareness,” Lee argues, “makes us look to others to tell us who we are.” Few of us can escape the need to emulate others in formation… and of course, some of these models are very valuable. But, we can never be someone else.
We are who we are and then once we become Christian our desire is to be like Jesus. This is certainly true as followers of Christ. We may be followers but it is in our own skin that we mirror ourselves to the one we are trying to follow.
The Book of Ecclesiastes warns us, “ Be not overly righteous, and do not make yourself too wise. Why should you destroy yourself?” Perhaps we should just be ourselves even while carefully looking to Christ.
“If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” Jesus
