TAMING THE PROPHET

Parker J. Palmer writes, “Avoid the bad habit of domesticating the prophet of your choice, turning him into a cheerleader for your way of thinking and way of life. Remember that all the great prophets were courageous and outrageous folks, who railed against the powers-that-be, challenged self-satisfied piosity, threatened the prevailing social order, and would find you falling short in some significant ways.”

I have known a few prophets in my time and they are pretty much as Palmer describes. You might save yourself a lot of time and effort if you avoid trying to tame a prophet. They don’t tame very easily if they are really prophets.

“Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” Jesus
