WISDOM LIST #12
How to Choose a Melon
Melon season is a rather long season and growing various varieties goes on all summer. Melons grow when it is hot and they have plenty of water. The common melons are watermelons, cantaloupes, honeydews and a few lesser kinds (Casabas, Crenshaw, etc.). Once they are in the marketplace (or in the field), How do we choose a Good Melon?
There are several tried and true ways:
1. Check the melon for color on the outside
2. Check the melon for color on the inside (if possible
to get a sample) … not likely at your Kroger’s store
3. Check and sniff the vine end of the melon
4. Check and sniff the other end of the melon
5. Don’t check or sniff anything
6. Thump with finger on right hand (watermelons,
Honeydews) … listen carefully to the thumbing
noise
7. Thump again with left hand and see if the thumping
noise is any different
8. Juggle the melon slightly from one hand to the other
hand to see ‘how it feels’
9. After you Juggle it, hand to your wife/husband or
another customer and have them Juggle it.. to
make sure
10. Try scratching the rind of the melon with your
fingernail, if peels off easily… it is ripe and ready
11. Look for someone over 60 years old and ask them
‘how to choose a good melon’
12. Look for someone over 16 years old and ask them
‘how to choose a good melon’
This wise method of picking melons gives a 30-70, to 70-30 to 50-50 chance of a good one. After choosing and buying melons this way you can know that getting just the right one is as possible as if you did none of the above.
