TIRED OF IT
The Letter to the Hebrews was written to people who were ‘Tired of It.’ They had been through many trials, persecutions, imprisonment and death for their faith. Then, they are encouraged in chapter 12:1, ‘to run the race with endurance’ while knowing it might get worse and even more tiring. But the racing coach wrote to them, “We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith” (12:2). Comparing the ‘work of the cross’ with our work/walk as believers, the author says, “don’t grow weary and lose heart” even though we are Tired of It. (12:3)
Our race is a long race. It takes some doing. I know I would prefer to be a sprinter rather than a marathon runner. The marathon is ‘’based on the legendary route of an ancient Greek messenger from the Battle of Marathon to the city of Athens in 490 BC.’ Now marathon runners must go 26.2 miles to complete the marathon race. I would certainly rather do about 450 100-yard sprints than 26 miles of continuous running. Either way… we must try to finish the race although we are Tired of It.
As John, an apostle, wrote, “This requires the steadfast endurance of the saints—those who obey God’s commandments and hold to their faith in Jesus” (Revelation 14:12) At least it is easy to say…
“I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. In the world you have trouble and suffering, but take courage—I have conquered the world.” Jesus
