SOMETHING NEW EMERGING
ch Bonhoeffer (1906-1945) German theologian wrote:
“One may ask whether there have ever before in human history been people with so little ground under their feet — people to whom every available alternative seemed equally intolerable, repugnant, and futile, who looked beyond all these existing alternatives for the source of their strength so entirely in the past or in the future, and why yet, without being dreamers, were able to await the success of their cause so quietly and confidently. Or perhaps one should rather ask whether the responsible thinking people of any generation that stood at a turning-point in history did not feel much as we do, simply because something new was emerging that could not be seen in the existing alternatives.”
(From “After Ten Years: A Reckoning Made at New Year 1943”)
(Note: Dietrich Bonhoeffer resisted the church being part of the Nazi political platform with a mixture of church and state. He was finally imprisoned for his opinions and actions. “Bonhoeffer was sentenced to death on 8 April 1945 by SS judge Otto Thorbeck at a drumhead court-martial without witnesses, without any evidence against him, with no records of the proceedings or a defense. He was executed in Flossenbürg concentration camp by hanging at dawn on 9 April 1945. Bonhoeffer was stripped of his clothing and led naked into the execution yard where he was hanged with five others.” (Wikipedia) (This was only about three weeks before the end of World War II and the surrender of Germany to the United Forces.)
I believe “something new is emerging that cannot be seen in the existing alternatives.” Lord, may your Kingdom come and your will be done….
