SCREENIES
“Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy’s push for a warning label follows years of alarm-sounding with his strongest appeal to lawmakers yet. In his statement, Murthy referenced a 2019 study that found risks of depression doubled among teens that scroll for more than three hours per day, and a 2023 Gallop poll showing that US teens log a daily average of 4.8 hours on social media.
“Why is it that we have failed to respond to the harms of social media when they are no less urgent or widespread than those posed by unsafe cars, planes or food?” (The Brew)
This is what I now call Screenitis and those who are afflicted are Screenies. Anything we do 5 hours a day has to have major impact and import into the human psyche and spirit. My observation (as previously noted in the Journal) is that I see little difference in adult or teen behavior. Most Screenies are just that: someone living in front of a screen. It seems unjust to continually point out teens as the only ones with an issue.
The Surgeon General thinks it is a bad health decision. The “Apostle and High Priest of our confession” probably does as well. (Hebrews 3:1)
