RELIGIOUS PEOPLE
Frederick Buechner, author and minister wrote, “One of the blunders religious people are particularly fond of making is the attempt to be more spiritual than God.”
Jesus had this same issue in the Gospel of Mark 7 and quoted the Pharisees from the Book of Isaiah 29, “Because this nation approaches [Me only] with their words and honors Me [only] with their lip service, but they remove their hearts far from Me, and their reverence for Me is a tradition that is learned by rote [without any regard for its meaning].” (Amplified Bible)
Jesus continued this conversation by saying, “You disregard and neglect the commandment of God, and cling [faithfully] to the tradition of men.”
Anytime we fall into this ‘traditions of men’ trap we will erroneously try to be more spiritual than God. Count on it. Lord, have mercy of my religious and false heart.
“You nullify the [authority of the] word of God [acting as if it did not apply] because of your tradition which you have handed down [through the elders]. And you do many things such as that.” Jesus
