NORMAL HUMILITY
Dealing with humility is tricky business. As soon as we pursue it there is every tendency to lift ourselves up to an artificial place and bring attention to our attempts. Then again; if we ignore the characteristics of a humble existence and personality, that too is very obvious.
The Desert Fathers told the story of a group of disciples who came to an elder and asked him to define humility, and he said, ‘If you forgive a brother who has injured you before he himself asks for pardon.’ This is what makes humility such an elusive thing. It goes beyond what is normal, beyond protocol and into a life of supernatural understanding and practice.
The greatest secret to this humility issue is to never know it exists in us and to never know it is being displayed and practiced. As soon as we know, or think we know; it isn’t and we aren’t, and it doesn’t.
“For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” Jesus
