GOD IN US
In the Gospel of John we read:
“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.” (1:14) NASV
Another version says it like this:
“So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.” (1:14) NLT
The prophet Isaiah told us that ‘a virgin would bear a son and his name would be Immanuel.’ (7:14) Matthew quotes this in the genealogy of Jesus (1:23) and says his name would be Emmanuel, which means ‘God with us.’ Then when Jesus came to earth, God became a man filled with the Holy Spirit. This is called the Incarnation: the union of God with humanity.
In John 1 where we started it reads: ‘The Word became flesh and dwelt, lived, made his home among us’ But this changed from not only ‘God with us’ but now ‘God in us.’ (Luke 17:21) The Lord moved in. We believe this or we believe religion. We are made new by the indwelling Christ. Or as Frederick Buechner (1926- 2022) wrote: “One of the blunders religious people are particularly fond of making is the attempt to be more spiritual than God.”
“If anyone loves me, he will obey my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and take up residence with him (or her).” Jesus
