FIRST DUTY OF LOVE

I am not a Paul Tillich (1886-1965) fan as a theologian and writer but I do appreciate some of his quotes. One of my favorites is, “The first duty of love is to listen.”

Nothing so defines kindness, caring, compassion and love like listening. If someone will not listen… then that someone does not really care. It reminds me again of my friend E.O. who is one of the best listeners I have ever known. I consider that to be the highest level of trust and confidence…to listen.

If we love one another we listen to one another. If we love Jesus we listen to Jesus.
