FIERY DARTS
A few days ago (23 May 2025) I wrote concerning, The Shield of Faith, from Ephesians 6: “Hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil.” (6:16-17)
This shield is one of six parts of the Armor of God: belt, breastplate, shoes, shield, helmet and sword. Since the article on the Shield of Faith, I have continued to think about the Fiery Darts (arrows). ‘The ancient fire-darts, formed of cane, with tow (flax) and combustibles ignited on the head of the shaft, so as to set fire to woodwork, tents, etc.’ (Commentary) The picture in Ephesians 6 is of the devil (Satan, the enemy) shooting these fiery darts at the believer in Jesus.
Matthew Henry (1662-1714) minister and Bible expositor wrote: “Our enemy the devil is here called the wicked one. He is wicked himself, and he endeavors to make us wicked. His temptations are called darts, because of their swift and undiscerned flight, and the deep wounds that they give to the soul; fiery darts, by way of allusion to the poisonous darts which were wont to inflame the parts which were wounded with them.”
Some of the Fiery Darts I see are Darts of Doubt, Temptation, Unbelief, Lust, Rejection, Anger, Arrogance and Pride. The list could get long and the quiver stuffed full of arrows. Faith is the shield with which we must quench these fiery darts. By the fullness of the Spirit of God and his wonderful grace… we shall overcome. It is not “against flesh and blood” but against the demonic realm.
“I have told you these things so that you won’t abandon your faith.” Jesus
