AT HOME WITH THE LORD
John, an apostle, wrote this quote from Jesus:
“All who love me will do what I say. My Father will love them, and we will come and make our home with each of them.” (John 14:23) (Note: ‘we will come to him and will make our dwelling place with him.” The context here is individual rather than corporate indwelling, it is important to note, however, that the pronoun ‘him’ is used generically here and refers equally to men, women, and children.’ New English Translation-notes)
Other versions use the term ‘make our dwelling place with him.’ Others say, ‘make our abode with him.’ The point is that ‘God is not just out there somewhere’ in the universe (cosmos) floating around. Or, God is not just “out there”. He is everywhere, including “in here.” As Jeremiah wrote: “Am I a God who is only close at hand?” says the Lord. “No, I am far away at the same time. Can anyone hide from me in a secret place?
Am I not everywhere in all the heavens and earth?”
says the Lord.” (Jeremiah 23:23-24)
Though the Lord is ‘present everywhere at all times’ (that’s tough to process for us earthlings), one of the places for the presence of the Lord is within the believer who gives invitation for the Holy Spirit to come live in us. This is the way Jesus put it:
“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you.” Jesus
