WHAT IS, WILL BE #3
Continuing with some thoughts from the last two days:
Wendell Berry, environmental activist and author has written much about land use, soil, natural trees and grasses and how important it is to keep, land, and soil and seeds pure and uncontaminated. He often quotes
Aldo Leopold (1887-1948), philosopher and conservationist. One such quote is what he calls ‘land ethic.’ Leopold wrote:
“Health is the capacity of the land for self-renewal. Conservation is our effort to understand and preserve this capacity.” And, “A thing is right when it tends to preserve the integrity, stability, and beauty of the biotic community. It is wrong when it tends otherwise.”
Berry continues, “The good of the natural world, depends upon human goodness, which is to say the human practice of the human virtues. And here I will say again that the needs of the land and the needs of the people tend to always be the same.”
(From a ‘A Small Porch’)
For seeds to remain the same and ‘produce after their own kind’ is to keep the soil and environment as much the same and to the original as possible. Deviation of natural order will cause deviation of spiritual order. And deviation of spiritual order will cause the same with natural order.
“The Kingdom of God is like a farmer who scatters seed on the ground. Night and day, while he’s asleep or awake, the seed sprouts and grows, but he does not understand how it happens. The earth produces the crops on its own. First a leaf blade pushes through, then the heads of wheat are formed, and finally the grain ripens. And as soon as the grain is ready, the farmer comes and harvests it with a sickle, for the harvest time has come.” Jesus
