WILDCATTER
A wildcatter is an individual who drills wildcat oil wells, which are exploration oil wells, drilled in areas not known to be oil fields or are past wells reopened. It is a chance taking, better know your stuff, better eat your Wheaties, venture.
It is like Gypo (or sometimes ‘gyppo’) loggers who work for themselves as opposed to loggers who work for a large logging company. I have been around several of these loggers and they are tough and fiercely independent.
These people in any field are independent, inner-directed, strong, unconventional, self-confident, direct and bold: kind of like Cowboys and Cowgirls. They don’t always do it like everyone else. They would be in the category I have labeled in other writing as Feral Christians if they were Christians. Now I add they are Wildcat/Feral/Cowboy Christians. Just like in the Book of Acts.
When people are filled with the Holy Spirit and are running around full of words of wisdom and knowledge, faith, gift of healings, miracles, prophecy, teaching, distinguishing of spirits, speaking in tongues, being kind, interpreting tongues, serving, teaching, exhorting, giving, loving, being merciful and leading our mates and children in righteousness… and turning the culture upside down… they will probably be in trouble from the religious and political leaders. Jesus was and we will be as well. Wildcatters live in such tension. That’s just the Kingdom way. We better eat our Wheaties and our spinach.
“Look, I am sending you out as sheep among wolves. So be as shrewd as snakes and harmless as doves. But beware! For you will be handed over to the courts and will be flogged with whips in the synagogues. You will stand trial before governors and kings because you are my followers. But this will be your opportunity to tell the rulers and other unbelievers about me.” Jesus
