THE VOICE OF THE BIBLE
Bible study and reading is important, but it is not essential. To those thousands upon thousands down through the years, and even now, who can neither read or write, the scriptures are a matter of hearing and seeing. To hear about Jesus and have him demonstrated has been the power to win multitudes into the Kingdom. It has not been “the Bible” that has won anyone, but the story of Jesus the Redeemer told so it can be understood and acted upon.
The scriptures are only as alive as the resurrected living Christ they tell about. It is only a book. We do not come to the logic of the book but to the love of the one the book is about. Logic, reason and intellectual understanding of scripture is extremely dangerous because we have been told and taught that the more “we know” the better. Study has its place but it is not a place above hearing the voice of the One the Bible is about. How could we possibly know Jesus without the essential silence, prayer, solitude and conversation with him to make him known to us? Scripture tells us that this is how we will know him and how we will know the Father. The Bible must read us as much as we read the Bible.
And you do not have his word abiding in you, for you do not believe the one whom he has sent. You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life. Jesus
