THE BURNING BUSH
“Imagine something for a second. Imagine you are 80 years old. Your skin’s a bit looser, you have whiter/thinner/no hair, your teeth are in a different room. If those things apply to you already I mean no disrespect – they’re all perfectly natural. Ask yourself these questions: looking back over my 80 years, what parts of my life am I proud of? How do I like to spend my time now at 80 years old? What hopes do I have for the future? What room are my teeth in?” (From ‘What is Stoicism’)
Or, also imagine being a quiet shepherd with a steady job, secure benefits, a wealthy father-in-law and a wife and a son living in the beautiful Median countryside. All is well…until one afternoon right before his eyes a bush burst into flame in front of him but was not consumed! Moses was 80 years old when this happened. He was then commissioned by the Lord to go back to Egypt (where he escaped from 40 years prior) and deliver the people of Israel from Egyptian Captivity.
An early historian described Moses as “tall and ruddy, with long white hair, and dignified.” He left Median to take his people through the Wilderness and out of captivity. I suppose that is the function of all elders… the old people, the wise and experienced is to lead our people (families) through the Wilderness.
Have a great day Three.
“For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote of me.” Jesus
