SOMETHING FROM SOMETHING
For a long time there has been much discussion (even significant argument) about the order of the creation of humans. It is because the first mention in Genesis 1says, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness…” So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” We were created in the image and likeness of the Trinity; notice it says “Our image and Our likeness.”
I believe the image was a soul/spirit image as it reflects the nature of God (“God is Spirit”). At this point there was not a manifested and incarnated Jesus who took on our humanity, or our Adam nature. The image and likeness was immaterial, having no physical substance.
In Genesis 2 we read, “And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.” This formation is not, in my mind, the Lord taking dust (dirt, earth), adding a little water and rolling it into Play-Doh to form a human figure. (Although I knew a kid in grade school that looked… well never mind.) From the dust God spoke man into existence and made something that was not into a new something. He breathed the Trinitarian likeness into man and we became living beings with the breath of life, both male and female.
“But from the beginning of the creation, God “made them male and female.” Jesus
