REMEMBERED NO MORE
David wrote in the Psalms, “Show me your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths. Guide me in your truth and faithfulness and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you do I wait all the daylong. Remember, O Lord, your tender mercy and loving-kindness; for they have been ever from of old. Remember not the sins of my youth or my transgressions; according to your mercy and steadfast love remember me, for your goodness sake, O Lord.”
Many of us can relate very well to David’s prayer, especially the part about not remembering the sins of our youth. Some of us got into some pretty crazy stuff trying to get life figured out and but for the extreme grace of the Lord we would be dead or in jail.
But the radical love of God grabbed us: A God of mercy and grace who actually does not remember our sins and cannot because of the cross and the sacrifice of Jesus. God only sees and remembers the sacrifice of Jesus for our sins…and not the sins themselves. The sins are remembered no more. Now our faith is challenged to not remember any better than God does… that’s the hard part. Cleanse our memories, O Lord, allow us to be like you and not remember our sins.
“He took a cup and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it all of you; for this is my blood of the covenant, which is to be shed on behalf of many for the forgiveness of sins.” Jesus
