WHOEVER CHOOSES

We are instructed to have the Lord’s Supper to “remember Him” and His finished work on the cross. Jesus says, “For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven, and gives life to the world” (John 6:33). One thing we are to ‘remember’ is that He “gives life to the world” and therefore He gives life to us individually. Earlier in John’s gospel, Jesus said, “Whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst, but the water that I shall give him shall become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life”(4:14).

So, two things are given, one is life and the other is eternal life, and they are clasped together in one true understanding, the Bread and the Wine. In these very natural images Jesus links the everyday life of women and men in the here and now with their eternal destiny. But the context is always one of choice: ‘Whoever drinks….’ And ‘whoever eats….’ and ‘whoever comes…’ and ‘whoever believes…’
