SPIRIT AND TRUTH
The apostle John’s gospel says, “For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” A little further in John’s gospel, Jesus tells the woman at the well that “we must worship in Spirit and Truth.”
The worship factor is determined by the grace factor. If we have not received grace we cannot worship in truth. A legal heart from law will rarely see a need to fully and freely worship… but just to ‘do things right.’ The legal heart will say what this woman said, “Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.” She just wanted tradition and the right place… Jesus wants the right heart.
If there is not any grace… there is no spirit of worship. Jesus continued, “But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”
“You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know.” Jesus
